James has lots to say about what we say. We continue our series on James looking at chapter 3.
Listen to the song Spirit and Truth by Chris Sayburn. Listen to the words and share together how it inspires you about God’s character and love and the way we respond in worship.
Read James 3:1-18 (1:19-21). What stood out to you from the passage?
1. Pete spoke on Sunday about the power that our words have to build one another up. Can you think of a time when someone spoke encouragement over you? How did it feel?
2. James talks about how ‘the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.’ (James 3:5). When we boast about ourselves we are taking credit from God that should be his. How can we choose to boast about God instead?
3. ‘Out of the same mouth come praising and cursing’ (James 3:10). Do we ever find ourselves speaking differently outside of church to how we would do at church?
4. James says that ‘…no human being can tame the tongue’ (James 3:8). The bar is set so high that we can’t achieve it on our own, we need God’s grace to transform us. Where do we need to ask for Jesus’ help today?
James 1:19-21 says ‘Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry’. What would it look like to have a community where everyone speaks well of each other, building each other up and speaking God’s grace over one another? How can we use our words this week to bless the people and places where we are? Pray for one another in this.
